It's stunningly beautiful up here in winter too. On 21 December I flew down to Aberdeen to collect my young son who was travelling as an unaccompanied minor and therefore could not change airlines from KLM to FlyBe for the last leg of his flight home for Christmas. So I flew down from Kirkwall on the early morning flight to meet him in Aberdeen. This was the sky as I got off the plane in Aberdeen. Photo is unretouched iPhone snap! I think it proves one should definitely come here in the winter months too: the days may be short but, by golly, they're bright and beautiful!
And it's brighter still in Orkney. This is the village of St. Mary's, just a few miles up the road, by the Churchill barriers, a few days ago:
